French Milice distributing furniture confiscated from Jews to victims of Allied bombing, Paris, 1943-1944. The Milice Francais was a paramilitary organisation, the French equivalent of the German Gestapo, formed in 1943 primarily to fight against the French Resistance. They were also actively involved in the rounding up of France's Jewish population for deportation.
