'The Entry of Queen Isabella into Paris', c1385 (15th Century). Isabella of Bavaria, carried in a litter, enters the city of Paris, before her marriage to King Charles VI of France in 1385. A crowd has turned out to watch as she is accompanied by ermine-clad nobles; trumpeters sound a fanfare from the battlements, a bishop waits in the doorway, and the court jester balances on the balcony above.
