James Abram Garfield, 20th President of the United States, c1881. Garfield (1831-1881) was the second US president to be assassinated. He was shot and severely wounded at the beginning of July 1881 by a man named Charles Guiteau who was a supporter of the Republican party. Guiteau was eventually executed, but the President lingered for more than two months before eventually dying from his wounds. His term was the second shortest in US history, after William Henry Harrison's.
