Sir George Strong Nares, Arctic explorer, 1878. After returning to England in 1854 from an Arctic expedition he was promoted lieutenant, served for two years in the Mediterranean, and took part in the Crimean War. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1875, was created Kight Commander of the Order of Bath in 1876, and received the founder's medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1877 and a gold medal from the Geographical Society of Paris in 1879.
