Sir Julius Benedict, musical composer and conductor, 1881. Born in Stuttgart, Benedict (1804-1885) came to London in 1835. He was conductor at several London opera houses, and of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society between 1876 and 1880. In 1850 he travelled to America as the accompanist for the singer Jenny Lind. Benedict composed symphonies and operas, the best known of which was 'The Lily of Killarney', which was first performed at Covent Garden in 1862.
