Frederick Max Muller, Professor of Comparative Philology at Oxford University, 1878. He prepared the first edition of the Sacred Hymns of the Brahmans, the Sanskrit Rig-Veda between 1849 and 1974. During a 25 year career at Oxford he promoted the comparative study of Indo-European languages and mythology and religion.
