Edward Matthew Ward, historical painter, 1878. His paintings were mainly about the English history of the 17th century and the French history of the period of the revolution and the first empire. He also produced a remarkable group of pictures of English social life in the 18th century, scenes in the life of Dr Johnson and Oliver Goldsmith being his favourite subjects. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
