William Quiller Orchardson, artist and Royal Academician, 1882. Born in Scotland, Orchardson (1832-1910) was a subject and portrait painter who moved to London in 1862. He is best known for his depictions of upper class society in the 18th century and Regency periods. He became a Royal Academician in 1877. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
