John Pettie, artist and Royal Academician, 1882. Pettie (1839-1893) was born in Edinburgh and moved to London in 1862, two years after he first exhibited at the Royal Academy. He became a Royal Academician in 1873, and contributed works to the Academy's Summer Exhibition every year from 1862-1893. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper.
