Thorn apple, from the 'Paper Museum' of Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657). Rome, Italy, ca. 1622-1623. A previously unknown species of herbaceous plant imported from the Americas. The Paper Museum ('museo cartaceo') was a collection of drawings and prints assembled by the Italian scholar Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657) in order to form a visual encyclopaedia of the ancient and natural worlds. Despite Cassiano dal Pozzo’s intentions the encyclopaedia was never published. Watercolor and bodycolor with touches of gum over traces of black chalk on paper, 27.9 x 31.2 cm. Inv. E.428-2009.
