German camel riders as part of the "Schutztruppe" ["Protective Forces"]. German Southwest Africa (Namibia), ca. 1907/08. The camel riders group was founded in 1907 by Captain Friedrich von Erckert and used in 1908 during the pursuit of the Nama chief Simon Kopper. The animals were imported from the Canaries Islands and the Sudan.
