The chateau was begun in 1581 by Henri de Guise and Catherine de Cleves and finished in 1665 by Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orleans, the Grande Mademoiselle. In the 19th century the chateau was a royal residence of King Louis Philippe. The chateau houses the Musee Louis-Philippe and is listed as a historic monument.
