Joszef Cardinal Mindszenty, after eight years in an AVO (Secret Police) prison at Felsoepeteny, returned to Budapest on October 31st, liberated by a commando of the Hungarian Army under major Antal Palinkas-Pallavicini. Pallavicini was sentenced to death after the end of the Revolution and executed on December 19th, 1956. On November 4, Mindszenty fled to the US-Embassy in Budapest, where he remained until 1971. In 1971 he was permitted to leave Hungary and lived in Vienna until his death in 1975.
