Gold mosaics on the ceiling of the Martorana, or Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio, a 12th century late Byzantine church in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The dome mosaics depict Christ Pantocrator, 4 archangels, 8 prophets holding scrolls and 4 Evangelists. Palermo was founded in 734 BC by the Phoenicians, and was settled by the Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs and Normans. Its Arab and Norman centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
