The palace was originally built 1743-46 as the summer palace of the royal dynasty of Mewar, under Maharana Jagat Singh II. It is now a hotel. Udaipur was the historic capital of the kingdom of Mewar and was founded in 1558 by Maharana Udai Singh II.
