Venus au Collier, bronze nude sculpture, 1928, by Aristide Maillol, 1861-1944, on the Place de la Loge, in Perpignan, Pyrenees-Orientales, Catalogne du Nord, France. The sculpture was presented to the town in 1949 by Maillol's son. The original sculpture, modelled on Maillol's maid, included a beaded necklace in her hands. It explores the theme of idealised female beauty. Maillol was born in Banyuls-sur-Mer and attended school in Perpignan. Behind is the Loge de Mer, a Catalan Gothic public building built late 14th century - 1540, used for civic and judicial purposes, and listed as a historic monument. Picture by Manuel Cohen
