Figure of Jidian, Dehua, China, Qing dynasty, 1700-1800. The man has no hair and wears a Buddhist monk's cloak. He also holds a fan. These attributes identify him as Jidian, or the Mad Monk. He was the principal character in a popular novel, described as fun-loving, meat-eating and alcohol-drinking. Porcelain, Blanc de Chine. Inv. C.547-1910.
