Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain. Timanfaya National Park was founded in 1968. It contains the Montanas del Fuego (Fire Mountains) which were created by more than 100 volcanic eruptions in 1730 and 1736 which devastated the area. Due to the arid climate, and consequent lack of erosion, this area has hardly changed since the last eruptions in 1824. Lanzarote, the Easternmost of the Canary Islands, lies 125km East of the African coast, in the Atlantic Ocean. Like the other islands in this autonomous Spanish archipelago, Lanzarote is originally Volcanic.
