Amphitheatre, Italica, Seville, Spain, built during Hadrian's reign, the third largest in the Roman Empire, with a capacity of 25,000, the cross shaped pit in the centre was for restraining wild animals. Italica was founded by Scipio Africanus in 206 BC for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Ilipa, a defeat for Carthage during the Punic Wars, which became a military outpost. It was one of the first cities in Roman Hispania and was the birthplace of two Roman Emperors: Trajan (53-117 AD) and Hadrian (76-138 AD)
