Crenellated bridge over the Adige River, Castelvecchio, 1354-79, Verona, Italy, with shadows forming a geometric pattern on the pavement. The castle, built with its bridge, for Cangrande II, stands on the probable site of a Roman fortress. The fortified bridge was intended as an emergency escape route for the Scala family towards the Tyrol. Castelvecchio was restored in 1923 and 1963-65.
