A detail of columns at the Temple of Zeus, on April 13, 2007, in Olympia, Greece. Olympia reached its height in the 5th century BC, when the Temple of Zeus, seen in the early morning light, was built, housing a huge gold and ivory sculpture of Zeus, created by Phidias, c. 480-430 BC, one of the seven wonders of the Ancient World.  After being covered by alluvial deposits for hundreds of years Olympia was rediscovered in 1776, and excavated in the 19th century.
