A general view of a tomb on April 13, 2007 in Mycenae, Peloppenese, Greece. Mycenae, a hill top citadel and palace complex, was the most important place in Greece from c. 1600 to c. 1100 BC. The site was first completely excavated by German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann between 1874 and 1878. The tombs, or shaft graves, built in the 16th century BC, contained large amounts of gold treasure indicating that they belonged to the rulers of Mycenae.
