Cascading domes and arcade (revak) surrounding the courtyard with hexagonal fountain, and a minaret to the right of the image, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, or Blue Mosque, 1609-16, by Mehmet Aga, Istanbul, Turkey. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I, dominates the Istanbul skyline with its cascading domes and six minarets. Built near the Hagia Sophia, it combines Byzantine style with Islamic architecture. The court, surrounded by a continuous vaulted arcade (revak), is about as large as the mosque itself. The historical areas of the city were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
