Arcaded courtyard with hexagonal fountain and a minaret in the background beneath a cloudy sky, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, or Blue Mosque, 1609-16, by Mehmet Aga, Istanbul, Turkey. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I, was built near the Hagia Sophia and combines Byzantine style with Islamic architecture. The court, surrounded by a continuous vaulted arcade (revak), is about as large as the mosque itself. The historical areas of the city were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
