Colonnade Around the Forum, Pompeii, Italy
AR9180446
A detail of a fountain on July 4, 2007, in Pompeii, Italy. This fountain at the corner of Via Di Nola, with an animal's head carved on a block of stone, is one of 42 public fountains fed by lead piping from water towers around Pompeii. The city, including its amazing plumbing system, was seriously damaged by an earthquake in 62AD and engulfed by Volcanic ash after a major eruption of Mount Vesuvius in August 79AD. It lay almost undisturbed  until archaeologists started to excavate it seriously in the 18th century.
