Opinion was sharply divided between support for a compromise claim of territory as far north as the forty-ninth parallel, and those who went for the more expansive 4.40 boundary, cartoon shows two Irish immigrants outside a Bowery theater debating the issue, created in 1846 by Fanny Palmer (1812-1876)
