Coin with Roman Legionary badge of Capricorn, Roman, c290. Roman coin showing Capricorn, a goat with the tail of a fish, the 10th sign of the zodiac. Part of the training of Roman troops was the instilling of a sense of regimental pride which created a disciplined, well-trained force, superior to any of their adversaries. This was established through ceremony, tradition and symbolism, an example of which is this coin which honours Legion II Augusta. Capricorn was the birth sign of the emperor Augustus under whom the unit was formed and after whom it was named. The coin was produced in London during the reign of Carausius who was a usurper emperor in Britain.
