Shalabhanjika Yakshi, from stupa 1 at Sanchi. The sandstone beams across the gateways of the stupa were held up by bracket figures like this. In ancient, pre-Buddhist indian fertility rite, girls were said to usher in spring by kicking a tree trunk while breaking off a branch. The type of tree spirit shown here echoes this tradition. OA 1842.12-10.1.
