Clay envelope for a letter, early Colony Period, around 1850 BCE. The sender's seal shows figures approaching a seated king. These envelopes were sometimes inscribed with a summary of the contents and sealed by witnesses, using the traditional Mesopotamian cylinder seal. The envelope and its contents were found with thousands of others at Kueltepe in central Turkey where merchants from Assyria established a trading centre. The texts on many of the tablets describe Assyrians bringing textiles and tin on the backs of donkeys, and trading it with the locals for silver and gold. Kueltepe
(ancient Karum Kanesh) was abandoned around 1740 BCE.
