The Magdeburg panel, Ottonian, around 965 CE. Ivory panel with a scene from the gospel of Saint Luke: Christ and a group of disciples meet a bier being carried out of the city gate. The background is pierced with equal-armed crosses.
The panel would have been backed with gold or copper and is one of sixteen depicting scenes from the Life of Christ, originally in the cathedral at Magdeburg, Germany. The mounting was destroyed around the middle of the 11th,
when plaques from the series were incorporated into the book cover of a codex. The panel was made in Milan.
