Wooden toggle of a monk, monkey, pig and horse on the back of a turtle, China, 17th century.
Wooden toggle of a monk, monkey, pig and horse on the back of a turtle, China, 17th century. Probably made of boxwood, this group illustrates characters from Journey to the West - a Chinese classic based on the true story of a 7th century Buddhist monk (Xuan Zang) who travelled to India to collect original scriptures. Other characters in the story include the monkey king (Sun Wukong) and Pigsy (Zhu Wuneng).
