Wanted poster for the outlaws Sam and Belle Starr, c1880-1886 (1954). Belle Starr was a famous female outlaw. In 1880 she married a Cherokee Indian, Sam Starr, who was killed in 1886 in a gunfight with a lawman. Belle's story became popular when Richard K Fox published a novel Bella Starr, the Bandit Queen, or the Female Jesse James in 1889, the year in which she was murdered. A print from the Pictorial History of the Wild West, by James D Horan and Paul Sann, Spring Books, London, 1954.
