In 1880 she married a Cherokee Indian, Sam Starr, who was killed in 1886 in a gunfight with a lawman. Belle's story became popular when Richard K Fox published a novel Bella Starr, the Bandit Queen, or the Female Jesse James in 1889, the year in which she was murdered.
