Vsevolod Garshin, Russian author, late 1870s. Garshin (1855-1888) was a writer of short stories. He was conscripted into the army during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, in which he was wounded, and his wartime experiences influenced his writing. He later suffered with mental illness and committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of his apartment building. Found in the collection of the State Museum of AS Pushkin, Moscow.
