Walmer Castle, Deal, Kent, 1998. Viewed here are the south and west bastions and moat. The embrasures for the cannons are particularly deep. The moat has been planted as a garden since the 19th century. Walmer Castle was built in 1539 as part of a chain of artillery forts to guard the south coast against the threat of invasion by Spain. The Castle is now the residence of the Warden of the Cinque Ports, currently the Queen Mother. The keep with trees, Longtown Castle, Herefordshire, 1992. The cylindrical keep of Longtown Castle, dating from c1200, stands on an earlier motte.
