The exiles make their final farewells
The exiles make their final farewells, Kaikeyi is persuaded that Sita has no need to wear robes of bark, as her going is voluntary, and Dasaratha orders enough jewels and fine clothing to be provided for her for fourteen years. Sita's bark robe lies discarded. Dasaratha loses consciousness and, when he comes round, orders his minister Sumantra to bring the chariot for the exiles. Sita is embraced by Kausalya, who reminds her unnecessarily that her first duty is to her husband despite his fallen state, and she replies that a good woman regards her husband as her god whatever his status. The three make their final farewells to the king and the king's wives, whom Rama humbly asks to pardon him if he has ever unknowingly offended any of them. Outside wait a chariot and a group of mournful citizens. Image taken from Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda. Originally published/produced in Udaipur, 1650.
