The Devil and the Schenectady Putter, 1911. Artist: Tom Wilkinson
The Devil and the Schenectady Putter, 1911. Cartoon on the cover of Golf Illustrated. The Schenectady was a centre-shafted, mallet-headed putter which American golfer Walter Travis used to win the Amateur Championship in 1904. The Royal and Ancient banned the use of the Schenectady from 1911, but Travis continued to use it in the US, where it remained legal.
