Temptation of Adam and Eve
Temptation of Adam and Eve [Whole folio] Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden which is surrounded by battlements a symbol of virginity. They stand before God who has his fingers raised in admonition pointing to the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. A pelican has her nest in the tree and is shedding her blood for her children. The pelican in piety is a symbol for Corpus Christi alluding to the legend that the Holy Rood Tree was created in the Beginning and foreshadows the Crucifixion Image taken from Holkham Bible Picture Book. Originally published/produced in England; circa 1320-1330.
