Stokesay Castle, Shropshire, c1930. Seen here from the south-west. The tower of the church of St John the Baptist is also visible. Stokesay Castle is the finest and best-preserved 13th-century fortified manor house in England. It was fortified by Lawrence de Ludlow, a wool merchant, who died in 1294.
