Scene from the life of Bertrand du Guesclin, (19th century).
Scene from the life of Bertrand du Guesclin, (19th century). How the good knight Bayard protected a bridge on the river Garigliano by himself for half an hour against 200 Spaniards. French knight Pierre Terrail of Bayard (c1476-1524) known in legend as the chevalier sans peur et sans reproche (fearless and blameless knight), had such a reputation for bravery that incredible stories were told of him. Bertrand du Guesclin (c1320-1380) entered the service of Charles of Blois, duke of Brittany, fighting against the invading English. In 1370 Du Guesclin was made constable of France by Charles V, and until his death worked to drive the English out of France. Colour lithograph produced by the Monastery of Aiguebelle.
