Richard Deane, English general at sea, c1653, (19th century). Deane (1610-1653) commanded the Parliamentary artillery at the Battle of Naseby in 1642, was appointed General-at-Sea in 1650 and played a leading role in the Civil War. One of the regicides, he signed Charles I's death warrant. He was given joint command of the fleet at the Battle of Portland in 1653, and later that year was killed in action in the Resolution at the Battle of the Gabbard.
