Refrigerators being assembled at the GEC in Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1963. Artist: Michael Walters
Refrigerators being assembled at the GEC factory in Swinton, South Yorkshire, 1963. Later to become Morphy Richards, the company transferred production from their Birmingham plant after the Second World War, possibly due to a shortage of workers. The automobile manufacturers in the area paid better wages and the assembly skills were similar. The plant still stands to this day, but cheaper imports mean that no large-scale production takes place any longer.
