The only child of King George IVand Caroline of Brunswick, Charlotte (1796-1817) married Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (the future King Leopold I of the Belgians) in 1816. She tragically died in childbirth the following year, leading to a great outpouring of public grief.
