Prince Eugene (1663-1736) distinguished himself as commander of the Austrian army fighting against the French in the War of the Spanish Succession. After a successful campaign in northern Italy he moved north to Flanders, fighting alongside the Duke of Marlborough in the victories at Oudenaarde and Malplaquet.
