Portrait of the Roman Emperor Gallienus, 3rd century. Gallienus (c218-268) was Emperor with his father, Valerian, from 253 until 260. He ruled alone after Valerian was captured in battle by the Persians, but the Empire experienced a series of revolts and invasions. He was assassinated while commanding a siege of the rebel-held city of Milan in 268. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg.
