Portrait of Saint Tikhon of Moscow (1865-1925), 1917.
Portrait of St Tikhon of Moscow, 1917. Tikhon of Moscow (1865-1925) was Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia of the Russian Orthodox Church during the early Soviet period, from 1917 until 1925. He was widely seen as being opposed to the Bolsheviks and openly criticised the murder of the Tsar and his family in 1918. In 1922 he was imprisoned in Donskoy Monastery and the following year was deposed as Patriarch, although the Russian Orthodox Church never recognised the deposition. He was canonised in 1981. Found in the collection of the Russian State Film and Photo Archive, Krasnogorsk.
