Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, American soldier, 1863. Beauregard (1813-1893) served as a general in the Confederate army in the American Civil War. As commander of the forces in Charleston, South Carolina, he ordered his troops to open fire on the Union garrison at Fort Sumter, the opening engagement of the war.
