Main concourse, Pennsylvania Station, New York City, New York, USA, 1933. Vintage linen postcard showing the interior main waiting room with it's arched windows, iron columns and high ceilings. Pedestrians walk through the main hall. Pennsylvania Station was built in 1910 in Beaux-Arts style for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The building, which was designed by McKim, Mead and White, was regarded as one of the architectural jewels of New York. Widespread outrage was generated  in 1962 when the decision was made to demolish it and replace it with the Pennsylvania Plaza complex, which includes Madison Square Garden, with the station facilities located below street level. Today the station remains the main intercity rail terminal of New York City and the busiest railway station in the United States, serving 600,000 passengers a day.
