Joseph Addison, English politician and writer, (19th Century). Addison (1672-1719) was a friend of Richard Steele and Jonathan Swift and edited The Spectator with Steele in 1711-1712. He served in government as Secretary of State for the Southern Department in 1717-1718. His most famous literary work was the play Cato, published in 1712.
