Impeachment Ticket for the Trial of W-rr-n H-st-ngs Esqr
Impeachment Ticket for the Trial of W-rr-n H-st-ngs Esqr, Gillray bases his satirical ticket on Sayers' composition (see P3324). Gillray often appropriated Sayers' work for different political ends, even, as here, to the extent of including Sayers' monogram (bottom left). The most significant difference between the two versions is the supporters on either side of the shield. Here in Gillray's version, an angry Lord Chancellor Thurlow sits on a commode, while on the other side of the shield a terrified Indian pleads for justice. In the court scene below, Hastings kneels dramatically in front of Thurlow. To his right, his supporters decry a politically motivated trial, while prosecutors on the left demand redress for Hastings' corruption. Published : 1788   Illustrated by James Gillray.
