As commander of the forces in Charleston, South Carolina, Beauregard (1818-1893) ordered his troops to open fire on the Union garrison at Fort Sumter, the opening engagement of the Civil War. He commanded the Confederate Army to victory at the First Battle of Bull Run, the first major battle of the war.
